Big Read Calendar of Events

Hello! The Big Read is upon us! Below is a quick breakdown of the events and promotions going on in conjunction with the 2010 Big Read. A complete list of activities can be found on the NEA Calendar of Events.
The Quincy Public Library will Kick-off the BIG READ Gatsby style at the Women’s City Club located at 1550 Maine, Thursday, September 9th from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. We will giveaway over 700 free copies of the book The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald. Patrons will be treated to free food, 1920s music, and a display of period automobiles! Mayor John Spring will welcome the crowd at 11:30 a.m. and Dr. Deirdre Fagan, Associate Professor of English at Quincy University will share some insights to the novel in a brief keynote address. It is not anticipated that we will have books left over after kick-off, however, if we run out at kick-off any attendee who did not receive a book will receive a voucher to pick up a book at a later date at the Library.

We will host a film series which will take place at the Quincy Senior and Family Resource Center each Monday at 6:00 p.m. We are also partnering with Quincy University to host a lecture series every Thursday at Quincy University’s North Campus. Book discussions will be held at various locations around town and the dates and times can be found on the NEA calendar of events or in the Big Read Brochure.

This year the Foundation will be hosting a fundraising event in conjunction with The Big Read called The Great Quincy. Ticket information can be found at www.maryweemsbarton.org and tickets will be available in administration starting September 1st.

New this year, we are hosting a BOOKFLIX video contest for teens. Teens are invited to create a two minute “book trailer” on The Great Gatsby. Guidelines for the contest will be available at the main circulation desk and can also be found at www.quincylibrary.org/teens To enter, teens must submit their 2 minute video in the following formats: CD or DVD in a protective case or sleeve OR thumbdrive. A signed Bookflix Entry form must be included with each entry. Please forward any submissions you receive to Deborah Riddell.
